Sadie is a character I developed as part of a music video elective at SCAD, where I was attempting to create a narrative video based on the Paul Hardcastle song, "Walkin' to Freedom." The images that I had developed in my head over years of listening to this song were reworked for this class, and the character of Sadie was designed to fill the place of the nondescript ambiguous figure who had originally been in my head years prior.
I wanted her to have a bold sense of inner and outer strength, as well as give off a clear sense of independence, both through the clothing she wore, and the way in which she carried herself. I wanted her to be attractive, but in a tomboyish way. And while she does show some skin in places, its all in the service of representing her environment, which throughout the course of the story I had created, takes her from the deserts of middle-America, to the west coast States of Nevada and California: i.e. going from a dead desert town to the big city.
